In honour of International Women’s Day, the SCAA wanted to highlight a few of our members to share the hard work they do in our industry. We are so proud to have incredible people like the women below make up our companies, and want to continue celebrating them. Their intelligence and determination are evident in their contributions not only to the siding industry, but in our community as a whole. Thank you Bhelle and Brianna for sharing your stories!

How long have you been at your workplace/ in the industry?

I’ve been in the industry for about 4 years now.

What drew you to the industry?

I was looking for a change of pace and a challenge! I come from a family that has strong women working within the construction industry already so it seemed like a natural and exciting progression in my life.

What challenges have you faced, and how did you overcome them?

Coming into the industry from a vastly different career background, the biggest challenge for me was learning to trust myself and my instincts when making decisions- both on the job and in my career more broadly. I was able to overcome that by leaning into the support network of other women in the industry. It’s hard to doubt yourself and your abilities when you’re part of such an incredible group, all cheering each other on from their own corners of incredible success.

Get in here! This is an ever-evolving industry that thrives on the passion and creative thinking of people from a multitude of minds and backgrounds. Once you’re in, you’ll have the opportunity to learn from some of the toughest and most supportive women you could meet- many of whom are more than happy to share their insight and experience.

The SCAA recently hosted its annual Golf Tournament on August 22nd at the beautiful Alberta Springs Golf Course in Red Deer, Alberta. The event was a complete sell-out and an incredible success, not just in bringing our community together but also in raising funds for an important cause.

Thanks to the amazing support of our members, guests, and sponsors, we raised $1,500 through ticket sales, which will go directly to supporting the Alberta Children's Hospital (located in Calgary) and the Stollery Children's Hospital (located in Edmonton). The SCAA is proudly matching that amount, for a total of $3,000, to be split equally between these two hospitals in support of children’s healthcare.

We were overjoyed by the fantastic turnout this year. It was a day full of fun on the course made even more special by the presence of so many members and guests. Your energy and enthusiasm truly made the day one to remember!

Of course, none of this would have been possible without the generosity of our sponsors. Their support made the event a reality, A special thanks to our sponsors:

Custom-designed “Forever Home” Showcases Contemporary & Functional Material Choices

In a market like Calgary, where custom homes are frequently designed with resale value top-of-mind, an architect can apply the principle of long-term value in material selection for clients looking instead for their “Forever Home.”
Calgary-based architecture firm Inertia Corporation was awarded the opportunity to apply this principle in 2017 with the design of their client’s custom home in Calgary’s sophisticated SW neighbourhood of Parkhill. Armed with lifestyle specifications outlined by the future homeowners, a challenging site grade, a general focus on sustainability for the project, and a shared vision for contemporary design, partners Trent Letwiniuk and Stephen Barnecut embarked on the assignment.

         PROJECT: Custom Home

          LOCATION: Parkhill, Calgary, Alberta

QUICKPANEL SPECIFICATION: 1,040 sq.ft. “Silver Metallic” with ColorMatch® trim

As part of the home’s development they incorporated innovative solutions for the site conditions that included a sunken main entry and garage concept, a horizontal length of windows to horizontally extend the impression of the front elevation, and QuickPanel 4mm Pressure-Equalized Rainscreen for both a modern appeal and a functional cladding material choice.

In consideration of the material selections for the exterior of the custom home, Letwiniuk outlines that they specifically sought a panel solution that was lightweight, displayed a clean face (without face fasteners), and offered a long-term appeal with little to no-maintenance to align with their client’s active lifestyle.

Aluminum panel is lightweight with a density that is only one-third that of steel. Lightweight building materials allow for many benefits from design flexibility, reduced transportation costs, temperature adaptability, and lower overall life cycle energy use. These qualities were the right fit for this new home project that focused on overall sustainability as part of its design objectives.

Furthermore, QuickPanel appealed to the architectural duo as the recommended panel product to achieve their desired color tone in a soft but modern “Silver Metallic,” clean reveal/trim lines, and the desired “start-and-stop” points for the façade’s aesthetic. They specified that QuickPanel trim pieces were to be painted using the patented ColorMatch® technology to the same soft “Silver Metallic” to complete the look.

Although Inertia Corporation was not the decision maker in the general contractor’s budgeting process for this project, QuickPanel easily matched both the design and budgetary considerations and the clients were pleased to proceed with the QuickPanel recommendation.

Over 1,000 sq.ft. of QuickPanel 4mm Pressure-Equalized Rainscreen is used on the feature massing of the home’s front elevation, which was completed in the summer of 2018. Installation of the innovative panel system was completed on-time and on-budget without scheduling or completion delays for the site construction crews.

The homeowners are thrilled with the design and material selections and especially happy to be living in their new “Forever Home.” The community of Parkhill continues to be revitalized through custom and infill design that is sure to match the contemporary sophistication of Inertia Corporation’s architectural success with their client’s new home.

The choice of aluminum building products reflects premium quality, values of sustainability, and an honourable legacy in what is built.

Aluminum was first used in quantity for building and construction in the 1920s. The applications were primarily oriented toward decorative detailing and art deco structures. In 1930, a breakthrough in the use of aluminum in building came with the construction of major structures like the Empire State Building

           1

          .

Today, aluminum is recognized as high-performance building material, and is one of the strongest, fastest growing products used in construction. All for good reason: the metal and its alloys are lightweight and attractive, durable, fire and corrosion resistant, and infinitely recyclable.

By nature, aluminum is lightweight with a density that is only one-third that of steel. Lightweight building materials allow for many benefits from design flexibility, reduced transportation costs, temperature adaptability, and lower overall life cycle energy use.

Aluminum has an attractive appearance in its natural finish, which can be soft and lustrous or bright and shiny. It can take on virtually any color, pattern, or texture

Aluminum is durable, it stands up better than most other materials in the harshest elements and weather conditions. Intense heat, cold, rain, snow, and wind are no match for the long-lasting and durable performance standards of the metal.

The natural physical characteristics of aluminum and its alloys are such that they do not burn under normal conditions nor do they contribute to flame spread or act as a fire accelerant

. The fire-resistance of aluminum increases the long-term value and safety fundamentals in commercial and residential construction.

Aluminum is infinitely recyclable, making it one of the most recycled metals in the world. Nearly 75 per cent of all aluminum produced is still in use today4. As society continues to work towards environmental sustainability, the unique properties and recyclability of aluminum are the right fit for the world's needs to reduce greenhouse gas emissions

Kaycan has been tracking the design trends, shifting demographics and architecture over the last year and it is clear that dark colors are poised to remain big in 2020, with a shift to bold, tranquil hues, reminiscent of mother nature’s color palette. Let’s take a look at the trending colors for the upcoming year!

           Castlemore

Castlemore is one of our most popular dark shades. Reminiscent of our beloved sweatshirt and as sophisticated as a well-tailored suit, this color is comfortable and yet evokes a quiet chic. Dress your home in a color that is on trend without being pretentious.

           Willow Green

Willow Green is a natural beauty full of promise. This lovely green color is infused with cooler undertones giving it a wide range of color combination possibilities. This shade will meld well with its surroundings without receding into the background. A color that will get noticed for all the right reasons.

           Manor

Manor is our darkest color, a mix of smoky charcoal and true black. This bold shade is a true expression of individuality. Let your inner artist shine by combining this shade with splashes of color along the trims, gables and front door. Be the envy of your street.

           Cabot Brown

Cabot Brown is a rich statement color. This deep chocolaty shade makes us picture a hot cup of cocoa, a slice of luxuriously indulgent fudge. This brown vinyl siding is the perfect color for a larger home with many trims in contrasting colors allowing you to showcase its architecture. A color that will speak volumes.

           Cabot Blue

Cabot Blue is definitely not a wallflower color. This beautiful shade makes a statement without saying a word. A nautical blue that conjures up pictures of the endless ocean, we love the versatility of this enchanting color

           Midnight Blue

Midnight Blue is a wonderfully relaxing color. The color blue has long been associated with peacefulness and who doesn’t want that in their life? The softest shade of blue in our color palette, this color reminds us of untouched waters in a perfectly still pond—quiet elegance.

Rest assured your vinyl siding colors will stay as bold and true as when they first installed on your home. Our commitment to color has led our research and development team to develop Helios™ Technology, allowing homeowners everywhere to “indulge in dark, bold vinyl colors”.

Inventors and manufacturers have gone to great lengths to turn out the best possible gutter guards at reasonable prices, but homeowners remain unimpressed. Understandably so, since their gutters keep on clogging—often, it’s the gutter guard itself that clogs up.

Dual-layer gutter guards really do outperform the single-layer type

There are more than 200 different gutter guards on the North American market alone, and that’s not counting the hundreds of registered patents for rainwater management systems.

Inventors and manufacturers have gone to great lengths to turn out the best possible gutter guards at reasonable prices, but homeowners remain unimpressed. Understandably so, since their gutters keep on clogging—often, it’s the gutter guard itself that clogs up.

Enter Alu-Rex. Based on customer feedback, the company decided it was time to get to the heart of the problem. The result—the all-new DoublePro System—is a marvel of ingenuity.

What fine filtering can and can’t do

How do you keep a rain gutter from clogging? Turns out it’s not that easy.

You might think a fine mesh or screen would do it. It sounds plausible. Indeed, many gutter guards use membranes that resemble bug screens, with holes no bigger than one or two millimetres across. And as it turns out, mesh gutter guards have a solid record of preventing debris as small as pine needles and shingle grit from blocking up rain gutters.

But sooner or later sticky substances build up—things like mud, pollen, roofing tar, and sap—and get stuck in the gaps in the mesh. They harden like glue, and neither wind, nor rain, nor vigorous and tiresome scrubbing can break them down. So at the end of the day, fine-filter leaf guards haven’t solved the clogged gutter guards problem.

Doubling down to block fine debris

Perforated aluminum is another solution with a decades-long track record. Single-layer systems are popular for their durability and because they offer a reasonable compromise between blocking debris and absorbing rainwater. And since their smooth surface makes buildup easier to remove, there’s less scrubbing and scraping to be done up on the tippy end of a ladder.

For Alu-Rex’s experts it was a no-brainer. Forget fine filtration and base DoublePro’s design on the properties of perforated aluminum.

Doubling down to cut out clogged gutter guards

The key to it all was the idea of using two protective layers instead of one. The bottom layer’s main purpose is to keep any debris that gets through the top layer from getting inside and blocking the gutter. Its big, oblong openings are offset from the micro-openings above them. So if, say, a pine needle tries to slip through the door, there’s actually no door to slip through.

All filters need occasional cleaning, and DoublePro is no exception. But with DoublePro the lion’s share of the cleaning is done by wind and rain, with human interventions few and far between. Alu-Rex has positioned the two perforated aluminum layers so as to optimize self-cleaning. With DoublePro, the smoothness of the aluminum, small openings in the top layer, larger perforations in the bottom layer, and the space between the two layers all work together to move sap, tar, pollen, and other sticky substances along until they flow right out of the gutter—naturally.

Kaycan vinyl siding is engineered for strength & durability. Using the Duratron Vinyl formula our engineers have figured out how to produce a light-weight, ultra-durable siding product.

Kaycan’s Duratron vinyl formulation is the foundation of all Kaycan vinyl siding, soffit and accessories. This proprietary formulation is made with the finest ingredients and advanced manufacturing processes and is then tested continuously throughout the day, every day to ensure Kaycan provides the industry’s most durable siding on the market.

More and more, homeowners are looking for eco-friendly siding options for their home. If this is you, take a look at factors to consider.

            Choosing Eco-Friendly Siding

KWP leads the way in ecologically-conscious manufacturing of engineered wood siding and trim board. KWP has implemented stringent and effective measures to minimize our energy consumption in our eleven manufacturing plants and distribution centers across North America.

The wood we use to manufacture wood siding and trim board contains 100% pre-consumer recycled content. Besides being EPP certified and conforming to CCMC and ANSI standards, wood has negligible emission levels, exceeding norms in North America, Europe and Asia. These unique green features make our engineered wood siding the only siding choice on the market that can easily help homeowners, architects and builders LEED certify their projects.

Many homeowners are realizing that one of the most significant ways they can directly reduce their carbon footprint is by living in a LEED certified home. Green homes will not only impact the environment positively, they will also increase savings on your monthly utility bills.

Homes that have LEED Certification use non-toxic building materials, drastically reduce the amount of allergens and are designed to create a proper balance between heating and cooling systems thus providing the homeowner comfort and peace of mind.

KWP has a no waste in the manufacturing process.

Unlike Fiber Cement, KWP Siding does not contribute to any health related problems.

The Risks of Fiber Cement: Inhaling crystalline silica can lead to serious, sometimes fatal illnesses including silicosis, lung cancer, tuberculosis (in those with silicosis), and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Exposure to silica dust has also been linked to other cancers. In 1996, the World Health Organization – International Agency on Cancer Research (IARC) identified crystalline silica as a “known human carcinogen”.

In 2016, KWP launched Home Designer 2.0, a tool that is used to help homeowners, builders, remodelers, designers and architects in their decision making process when it comes to selecting home exterior products.

             Home Designer 2.0

When we first launched, we met Kevin & Jodi, homeowners, who were in the beginning stages of building their home and were excited with all the possibilities at their disposal. We had the opportunity to sit down with them, upon the completion of their project, to see how their journey was and if they were happy with the final product.

KWP: Tell us about the project itself.

We built this house to fit the needs of our family. We broke ground October 2016, moved in April 1st.

KWP: How did you discover KWP?

A friend of mine, in town, just resided her house with KWP. She told me about all of the benefits of the product and said it was a clear choice for her. That led me to the KWP website and FB page.

KWP: What helped you in your color choice?

The moment I saw the yellow house on your website, that was it. There was no other option for me. I’ve always had a thing for yellow houses! They look so happy to me. In a province that has winter for 6 months of the year, I didn’t want a grey house!

KWP: How was your service with KWP?

I have been very impressed with the service from KWP. I had a lot of questions throughout the exterior design and I felt they gave me more help than was required; even showing me different colour options, using Home Designer 2.0, with my exterior drawings. It was very helpful in making final design choices.

KWP: Are you happy with the end product?

I’m more than happy. I wouldn’t change anything, I love our house.

There is so much talk nowadays in the building material industry and even more specifically, within the architectural community, with regards to choosing “sustainable” building materials and “sustainability” of buildings. But how do architects go about doing this and more importantly, what is it they should be looking for when choosing a “sustainable” building product? Is there a checklist? Is there a sustainability standard? To explore this further, let’s first get crystal clear on the definition of the word, “sustainability”:

Pulled directly from the great “Google” itself, the word “sustainability” simply means, the ability to be maintained at a certain rate or level. A sustainable building material therefore, one could derive from the definition, must have the characteristics of quality and reputability. But that is a very simple statement for a much more complex process when trying to determine exactly what is quality and reputability. Architects need to understand what the criterion is for “quality” and “reputability” and try and balance that with realistic client budgets and expectations. This can be a tricky balancing act to play when juggling constrained client budgets and high expectations, which is more often than not, the case for many architect firms.

Speaking from a manufacturer’s view point, no manufacturer will ever come right out and say that they do not have a quality product with no reputability and that isn’t sustainable. When asked the tough questions, the answer will always be yes, or some very complex and indirect form of no, that most architects would have a challenge deciphering. So how do you really get to the bottom of the real answers without being led astray? Here is a basic checklist of things to look for when trying to choose “sustainable” building materials for your next project:

           1. How long has the company been in business? : This sometimes can be one of the greatest proofs of sustainability, quality and reputability; the test of time. Find out how long the company has been manufacturing for and if it is 10-20 years +, go out and visit projects that still have their materials installed to inspect the quality.

           2. How many valid warranty claims have been placed on this particular product?: This is again one of those tough questions that the manufacturer may try to avoid when asked, but try and go further than the manufacturer. The inability of a building material to perform can end up negatively affecting various elements down the supply chain, including distributors and contractors. So don’t limit this question to the manufacturer, reach out to the products distributors and product applicators to find out if they’ve had many warranty claims and what the experience has been like. This can sometimes produce some of the most brutally honest feedback you can hope to hear.

           3. What kind of testing and certifications do the products have?: An in depth look at the products adequate testing and certifications can answer a lot of questions with regards to quality and even sustainability. Again, from a manufacturer’s viewpoint, a tremendous amount of monetary resources is often dedicated to this area, so take the time to review and truly understand what the testing means and indicates with regards to the products performance, especially in specific climates. Some States have product approval codes that the product must achieve which indicates that there has been significant testing and quality control measures taken to ensure the product can withstand the States specific climatic diversity. Countries like Canada actually have a national certification program called CCMC (Canadian Construction Materials Centre), that holds building materials to a national standard and any product must meet a gauntlet of pre-determined test standards in order to be given a registered CCMC number.

           4. Does the manufacturer have a North America recognized quality control program?: This goes one step further to examining the manufacturer’s product testing which is ensuring that the manufacturer has a North American recognized quality control program. This is a costly and timely initiative for any manufacturer to undertake, especially younger and smaller manufacturers like us. It is a question many architects never ask manufacturers but one that can really tell you a lot about the quality of the building material you are considering.

Ultimately, it is the manufacturer’s responsibility to ensure you have all of the adequate information at your disposal and that they make themselves available and accessible to answer any questions you may have. The due-diligence of choosing sustainable building materials for your client’s project can be timely and challenging at times, but don’t be afraid to hold the manufacturer accountable.
